Understanding Mahr in Islam
What is Mahr?
A mandatory gift from the groom to the bride, owned exclusively by her. It is her financial right and security — not a price for the bride.
Muqaddam vs Mu'akhar
Muqaddam is paid upfront at Nikah. Mu'akhar is a deferred debt on the husband, payable upon divorce or death. Together they form the total Mahr.
Mahr Types
Mahr can be cash, gold, silver, property, or any permissible item of value. The Prophet ﷺ accepted teaching Quran as Mahr in one narration (Sahih Bukhari 5149).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mahr (صداق) in Islam?+
Mahr is a mandatory gift given by the groom to the bride at the time of Islamic marriage (Nikah). It is her exclusive right — she can spend it however she wishes and it cannot be taken back without her free consent. It is not a bride price; it is a financial security for the wife.
What is the minimum amount of Mahr?+
Scholars differ: the Hanafi school sets the minimum at 10 silver dirhams (approximately 30g of silver). The Maliki school requires a minimum but allows a small amount. The Shafi'i and Hanbali schools have no fixed minimum — any mutually agreed amount is valid. Consult a qualified scholar for your madhab.
What is Muqaddam (المقدم) and Mu'akhar (المؤخر)?+
Muqaddam is the portion of the Mahr paid upfront at the time of Nikah. Mu'akhar is the deferred portion — agreed upon at Nikah but paid later, typically upon divorce or the death of the husband. Both components together form the total Mahr.
Can Mahr be paid in non-cash forms?+
Yes. Mahr can be any permissible property of value: gold, silver, real estate, jewelry, or even a service of value (like teaching someone the Quran, as narrated in a hadith). The key is that the bride agrees and its value is clear.
Can the bride waive or return the Mahr?+
Once she receives it, the Mahr fully belongs to the bride, and she has the absolute right to keep it, spend it, or voluntarily return part or all of it. No one — including her family or husband — can force her to give it back.
What happens to the deferred Mahr (Mu'akhar) on divorce?+
If the marriage ends in divorce, the deferred Mahr becomes immediately due and must be paid in full by the husband. If the husband dies, it becomes a debt on his estate that must be settled before inheritance is distributed.
Is there a recommended amount for Mahr?+
There is no single prescribed amount. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The best of dowries is the easiest' (Ibn Hibban). Some scholars use local cost-of-living as a reference. Mutual agreement and sincerity are more important than the figure itself.
What if the husband cannot afford a large Mahr?+
A smaller agreed-upon Mahr is perfectly valid. A small Mahr given with sincerity is better than a large one that causes hardship. The Prophet ﷺ married some of his companions' wives with Mahr as simple as an iron ring or teaching Quran verses.
