Zakat al-Fitr (also called Fitrana or Sadaqat al-Fitr) is a compulsory charity due at the end of Ramadan, before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It purifies the fasting person from any shortcomings in their fast and feeds the poor on the day of Eid. Every Muslim who possesses food beyond their day's needs must pay.
Who must pay Zakat al-Fitr?+
Every Muslim โ man, woman, child, or elderly โ who has food or provision beyond their own needs on the day and night of Eid al-Fitr must pay. The head of household pays on behalf of all dependants including spouse, children, and anyone else in their care.
How much is Zakat al-Fitr per person?+
The amount is one Saa' (approximately 2.5โ3 kg) of the local staple food per person โ commonly rice, wheat, dates, or barley. Most scholars permit the monetary equivalent. In the UK this is typically ยฃ5; in the US approximately $15; in Saudi Arabia 25 SAR per person.
When must Zakat al-Fitr be paid?+
It must be paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It is recommended to pay 1โ2 days before Eid so charities can distribute in time. Paying after the Eid prayer is still accepted as general sadaqah but the Zakat al-Fitr obligation is considered missed.
Can Zakat al-Fitr be paid in cash?+
The Hanafi school explicitly permits monetary payment. The majority of contemporary scholars also allow it for practical reasons โ so that Islamic charities can efficiently purchase and distribute food. This is now standard practice through organisations like Islamic Relief and Muslim Hands.
What is the difference between Zakat al-Fitr and Zakat al-Mal?+
Zakat al-Fitr is a fixed per-person charity paid at the end of Ramadan โ it is about purification of the fast. Zakat al-Mal is the annual 2.5% charity on savings/wealth that exceed the Nisab threshold (approx. 85g of gold) held for one full lunar year. Both are obligatory but separate obligations.
Who receives Zakat al-Fitr?+
Recipients are the eight categories eligible for all Zakat (Quran 9:60): the poor, the needy, those in debt, travellers in need, etc. Scholars recommend giving locally to poor Muslims so they may celebrate Eid with enough food. It may also be given through a reputable Islamic charity.
Can I pay Zakat al-Fitr on behalf of a foetus?+
The majority of scholars say Zakat al-Fitr is not obligatory for an unborn child. However, the Hanbali school recommends it voluntarily. Some scholars also say it is recommended to pay for a foetus if the pregnancy is advanced (6 months or more). Consult a qualified scholar for your madhab's ruling.
