حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَمْروِ بْنِ السَّرْحِ أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ رَافِعٍ التَّنُوخِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الْعِلْمُ ثَلَاثَةٌ وَمَا سِوَى ذَلِكَ فَهُوَ فَضْلٌ آيَةٌ مُحْكَمَةٌ أَوْ سُنَّةٌ قَائِمَةٌ أَوْ فَرِيضَةٌ عَادِلَةٌ
English Translation
Telah menceritakan kepada kami [Ahmad bin 'Amr bin As Sarh], telah mengabarkan kepada kami [Ibnu Wahb], telah menceritakan kepadaku [Abdurrahman bin Ziyad] dari [Abdurrahman bin Rafi' At Tanukhi], dari [Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Al 'Ash], bahwa Rasulullah shallallahu 'alaihi wasallam berkata: "Ilmu ada tiga, dan yang selain itu adalah kelebihan, yaitu; ayat muhkamah (yang jelas penjelasannya dan tidak dihapuskan), atau sunah yang shahih, atau faraidh (pembagian warisan) yang adil."

Imam Abu Dawud compiled Sunan Abu Dawud from approximately 500,000 hadiths, selecting 5,274. His collection is particularly focused on fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and legal rulings. He personally wrote to Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal informing him of the work, and received his approval.
Abu Dawud said: 'I wrote 500,000 hadiths of the Prophet ﷺ, then selected this book from them.' He focused especially on rulings related to halal and haram.
