Frequently Asked Questions
What is Umrah?+
Umrah (ุนูู ูุฑูุฉ) is the lesser pilgrimage to Makkah โ a voluntary act of worship that can be performed at any time of year, unlike Hajj which is only in Dhul Hijjah. It involves four main rites: entering Ihram (state of ritual purity), performing Tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba 7 times anti-clockwise), performing Sa'i (walking 7 times between Safa and Marwa), and Halq/Taqsir (shaving or shortening the hair).
What are the rules of Ihram?+
While in the state of Ihram you must not: use fragrance (perfume, scented soap/shampoo), cut hair or nails, engage in marital relations, hunt animals, or cover the head (for men). Men wear two unstitched white sheets; women wear their normal modest clothing but must NOT cover their face or hands while in Ihram (though it is Sunnah to cover from non-mahram men using a niqab attached to a cap, not touching the face).
What is the Miqat?+
The Miqat (ู ููุงุช) are the designated boundary points around Makkah at which pilgrims must enter the state of Ihram before proceeding. Each direction has its own Miqat โ e.g., Dhul Hulayfah (from Madinah), Juhfah (from Levant), Qarn al-Manazil (from Najd/Gulf), Yalamlam (from Yemen), and Dhat Irq (from Iraq). You must enter Ihram before crossing your relevant Miqat or at the airport before boarding if flying over.
Is it obligatory to visit Madinah for Umrah?+
Visiting Madinah and the Prophet's Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi) is NOT a required rite of Umrah โ Umrah consists only of acts in Makkah. However, visiting Madinah is highly recommended and deeply beloved to Muslims. The Prophet ๏ทบ said: 'Whoever visits me after my death, it is as if he visited me during my life.' (Daraqutni)
How long does Umrah take?+
The actual Umrah rituals (Tawaf, Sa'i, and Halq) can be completed in 2โ4 hours depending on crowd levels. Most Umrah trips are 7โ14 days to allow time for additional worship, visiting historical sites, and performing prayers in the two holy mosques.
What duas should I make during Umrah?+
Key duas include: making your intention (niyyah) at the Miqat, reciting the Talbiyah (Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk...) throughout, making dua at the Kaaba, dua at the Multazam (between the Black Stone and the door of the Kaaba), dua on Safa and Marwa, and any personal dua from the heart. The Prophet ๏ทบ said the dua of the one who is traveling is answered.
