حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فِرَاسٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو قُتَيْبَةَ سَلْمُ بْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْعَوَّامِ وَهُوَ عِمْرَانُ الْقَطَّانُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ مُطَرِّفِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الشِّخِّيرِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُثِّلَ ابْنُ آدَمَ وَإِلَى جَنْبِهِ تِسْعَةٌ وَتِسْعُونَ مَنِيَّةً إِنْ أَخْطَأَتْهُ الْمَنَايَا وَقَعَ فِي الْهَرَمِقَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ
English Translation
Telah menceritakan kepada kami [Abu Hubairah Muhammad bin Firas Al Bashri] telah menceritakan kepada kami [Abu Qutaibah Salm bin Qutaibah] telah menceritakan kepada kami [Abu Al 'Awwam 'Imran Al Qaththan] dari [Qatadah] dari [Muththarrif bin Abdullah bin Asy Syakhir] dari [ayahnya] berkata: Rasulullah Shallallahu 'alaihi wa salam bersabda: "Anak cucu adam dibentuk dan disampingnya ada sembilanpuluh sembilan kematian, bila kematian-kematian luput darinya, pada akhirnya ia jatuh pada masa tua juga." Berkata Abu Isa: Hadits ini hasan shahih gharib.

Imam at-Tirmidhi was a student of Imam al-Bukhari and Abu Dawud. His collection is distinctive for including the grading (hasan, sahih, da'if) of each hadith alongside notes on which madhab (legal school) relies on it — making it both a hadith collection and a work of hadith criticism.
Jami' at-Tirmidhi is the only collection in the Kutub al-Sittah where the compiler grades every hadith himself, notes scholarly differences, and indicates legal usage.
